Oak beams differ from planks by their higher thickness from 40mm to approx. 80mm and are suitable for interior and exterior use, they belong to popular building and joinery timber with a wide range of applications. Oak beams are in great demand for table tops, kitchen counters, bathroom sinks and shelves. They are also used for oak fences, terraces and floors, piers, decks, bridges, pergolas, gazebos, trusses, staircases, stair treads, interior and garden furniture. Quality planks are made of sufficiently load-bearing wood and can also be planed on four sides.

We cut oak beams to order in the same and different widths from the centre timber up to 500mm wide and in full meters up to 5m long. On customer’s request we can supply planned, sanded, milled edges to radius.

Oak beams have a decorative and beautiful appearance and pattern, but above all, they are very durable and durable in the exterior.

HOW DO WE CLASSIFY OAK BEAMS DEPENDING ON THEIR PROPERTIES AND PURPOSE OF USE?

Oak beams have a cross section of 100mm or larger (e.g. 150x150mm, 120x180mm and more), meaning they usually contain a center in the axis of their section, which results in larger drying cracks, which, however, in limited quantities do not affect the strength of the beam; it is more of an aesthetic effect.

Rustic look with a higher proportion of knots and curls

Rustic oak beams emphasize the natural beauty of oak wood without perfect industrial sharp-edged processing. Beams processed in this way will take you back several centuries to a time when perfection was not emphasized. More or less running edges of stripped bark, small and large healthy knots remind you every time you look at this beautiful piece of wood that in the beginning there was a tree that had grown for tens or even hundreds of years with a natural curvature rising towards the light with a bushy branching in the crown of the tree. To produce rustic oak beams, trunks with a larger number of cut branches (knots) and not completely straight are used.

Rustic oak beams are suitable for use in larger square and rectangular dimensions of 150mm or more, e.g. in the form of a solid bench, table, or design element in the interior and exterior.

Sharp-edged appearance with fewer knots

When producing exposed oak beams and prisms, we emphasize the quality of processing so that all edges are sharp without curves and a large number of larger knots. Exposed oak beams, with their clean appearance and quality, show the majesty of oak wood and are suitable for structural and luxurious design elements of various small and large building elements.

To produce exposed oak beams, logs are used, in order, the first and second pieces from the bottom of the tree with a smaller number of cut branches (knots) and minimal curvature.

Exposed oak beams and prisms are also suitable for use in smaller square and rectangular dimensions of 80mm and more, e.g. solid chairs, tables, design elements in the interior and exterior – gazebos, pergolas, exposed trusses and other solid structures.

HUMIDITY AND SURFACE TREATMENT OF OAK BEAMS

Freshly cut (castrated) oak beams with undetermined moisture content

The disadvantage of using unprocessed lumber can be a high water content and subsequent volume changes and deformations when drying to equilibrium moisture. Higher water content can also be problematic in terms of increased risk of attack by wood-destroying insects, molds and fungi, but this is to a small extent in the case of oak, as oak is resistant to these attacks.

When purchasing raw lumber, it is a good idea to choose the right quality for the type of use. Generally speaking, center-grained lumber, ideally radial, without any pith content, will be the strongest and most stable.

On the other hand, installing elements made of undried wood containing pulp can cause undesirable effects in the form of twisting, drying cracks, etc.

This product of basic sawmilling does not lose its popularity in traditional carpentry constructions, where a relatively wide range of cross-sectional dimensions is used – they are used in gazebos, pergolas, roof trusses, exterior structures, oak beams in the garden, bridge decks, sleepers and other

Technically dried, planed oak beams

The profiles are made from technically dried oak lumber with guaranteed moisture content (usually 15% ±3%). For larger dimensions over 120mm, it is produced as center lumber or for smaller dimensions, the primary cut of the log is made with care taken to cut through the pith (center of the trunk). This guarantees higher dimensional stability.

Four-sided planing or grinding and chamfered edges are a matter of course – for ceiling beams and other visual elements, we supply oak beams with planed, ground, decoratively milled edges, grooves or hand-planed edges.

We will be happy to advise you on choosing the right material…

RESISTANCE AND COATING OF OAK BEAMS

Oak does not need a finish in outdoor conditions, as it can last for about 20 to 30 years without decaying if not in direct contact with the ground. Untreated oak will turn grey in about 2-3 years due to sunlight and humidity. The colour will first change from the points most exposed to the weather and will even out over a few years depending on the conditions. The greying of the wood can be slowed down by treating the wood with transparent wood preservatives. Exterior cladding made of oak also does not need to be finished, as the material oak can withstand UV radiation and humidity. However, the wood will turn grey over the years. Please note that during the greying process the surface tone may be uneven.

HOW ARE OAK BEAMS MAINTENANCED?

Maintaining oak beams is key to their longevity and aesthetic appeal. Known for its strength and durability, oak wood requires specific care to prevent damage from moisture, UV rays, and mechanical wear.

Regular maintenance

Cleaning : Oak beam structures should be cleaned regularly to remove dust and dirt. Use a soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment to minimize the risk of scratching the surface.

Humidity : Maintain an optimal humidity level in the room (40-60%). Too high or low humidity can cause wood to warp.

Temperature : The ideal temperature for keeping oak beams is between 18-22°C. Extreme temperatures can negatively affect the structure of the wood.

Protective coatings

Oiling : Regular oiling of beams helps protect the wood from moisture and UV rays. It is recommended to apply oil once a year, or more often in high traffic areas.

Varnishing : The use of varnishes provides an additional layer of protection and can extend the life of the beams. Varnished surfaces should be maintained with regular repainting every few years.

Damage prevention

Inspection : Regularly inspect your joist structures for signs of damage, such as cracks or rot. Early repair can prevent bigger problems in the future.

Water protection : Ensure that the beams are free from water and well ventilated. Prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to fungal and insect infestation.

Proper maintenance of oak beams includes regular cleaning, maintaining optimal environmental conditions, applying protective coatings, and regularly checking the condition of the wood. This way, you can ensure the longevity and beauty of these natural materials.

HOW LONG DO OAK BEAMS LAST?

The lifespan of oak beams and structures is greatly influenced by several factors, including the quality of the wood, construction techniques, and maintenance. Oak wood is highly valued for its  high durability  and ability to resist rot and pests, making it an ideal material for a variety of construction applications.

Expected lifespan

Decades : Oak trusses can last for decades, often more than 100 years, if properly maintained.

In harsh conditions : In extreme conditions, such as humid or dry areas, oak wood exhibits excellent resistance to cracking and warping, contributing to its long lifespan.

Key factors affecting service life

Wood quality : Using high-quality, healthy oak wood is essential to ensure longevity.

Construction techniques : Proper construction details and connections ensure stability and resistance to external influences.

Maintenance : Regular maintenance, such as condition checks and chemical protection against pests and moisture, can significantly extend the life of roof trusses.

Aesthetics and functionality

Oak wood is not only durable but also aesthetically appealing, with a beautiful texture and rich color tones. This combination of functionality and aesthetics makes oak an ideal choice for structures that require both strength and visual appeal. In conclusion, with proper care and maintenance, oak beams and structures can serve for many years without significant signs of wear.
