Parquet is a piece of processed hardwood (oak or beech), intended to be assembled into a parquet pattern or into a mosaic and create continuous surfaces, most often floors. Oak parquet can have various patterns, both endless – repeated, and large and symmetrical patterns. Table patterns, English patterns, flying, dovetail, interlaced or castle patterns are no exception. Mosaic parquet often forms rhombuses and triangular shapes, or specific patterns in the Baroque style.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF OAK PARQUETS?

Oak parquet offers a number of advantages that make it a popular choice for flooring in homes and commercial spaces. Here are the key benefits of oak parquet:

High resistance and durability

Oak wood is known for its  exceptional strength  and  resistance to mechanical stress . Thanks to its high density and hardness, oak can withstand impacts, scratches and other forms of wear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas such as living rooms or hallways.

Aesthetic appeal

Oak parquet floors have  a natural beauty  with pronounced grain patterns and warm tones that give an elegant look to the interior. They are very versatile and easily combine with different furniture styles, making them a timeless choice for any design.

Moisture resistance

Oak is  more moisture resistant  than many other woods, meaning it is less likely to warp or crack when exposed to changes in temperature and humidity, making it a great choice for rooms like kitchens and bathrooms.

Easy maintenance

Maintaining oak parquet is relatively simple. Regular cleaning and occasional treatment with special products helps maintain its appearance and extend its lifespan.

Health benefits

Wooden floors, including oak, have a positive effect on indoor air quality. Unlike carpets, they do not trap dust and allergens, making them a suitable choice for allergy sufferers.

Increase in property value

Oak parquet floors are often considered a sign of quality and luxury, which can contribute to a higher resale value of a property.

Compatibility with underfloor heating

Oak wood is also compatible with underfloor heating, making it a practical choice for modern homes.

These advantages make oak parquet an attractive investment for anyone looking for a high-quality and aesthetically pleasing floor covering.

HOW TO LAY OAK PARQUET CORRECTLY?

Preparation before laying

Parquet acclimatization :

Before you start laying, let the parquet packages acclimatize in the room where they will be laid. It is recommended to allow at least 48 hours in summer and 4-5 days in winter to allow the wood to adapt to local conditions.

Environmental conditions :

The ideal temperature for laying is between 18 and 20 °C with a relative humidity of between 45 and 65%.

Checking the substrate :

Ensure the substrate is dry, level and clean. Fresh concrete should dry for at least 1 week per centimeter of thickness.

Choosing a laying method

Full-surface bonding :

Use the appropriate adhesive according to the type of substrate (e.g. concrete, wood). It is important to maintain expansion joints around the entire perimeter of the room.

Floating method :

The parquets are connected using a tongue and groove system without nailing or screwing. It is important to ensure expansion joints of at least 10 mm between the parquets and the wall.

Parquet laying

Choosing the laying direction :

It is recommended to lay parquet flooring in the direction of the light or along the longest wall of the room. For patterns such as Chevron or herringbone, start from the center axis of the room.

Laying the first row :

Start with a whole parquet, cut the tongue on the long and short sides and lay it against the wall with spacers for the expansion joint. Continue with the next rows so that the short joints are not in one line, but are offset by at least 30 cm.

Finishing the installation :

After finishing the last row, don’t forget the expansion joint between the parquet and the wall. Use a hammer and a tightening hook to adjust the last pieces.

Maintenance after installation

Once the installation is complete, it is important to maintain the floor regularly to maintain its appearance and functionality. Regular cleaning and the use of appropriate protective products are recommended. By following these steps, you will ensure the correct installation of oak parquet, which will lead to its long life and the aesthetic appearance of your floor.

WHAT ARE THE MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR OAK PARQUETS?

Regular cleaning

Vacuuming:  Before each cleaning, it is important to vacuum the floor to remove small dirt and stones that could scratch the surface.

Use appropriate cleaning products:  It is essential to use cleaning products specifically designed for wooden floors. Avoid all-purpose detergents, which can damage the floor.

Surface protection

Varnish or oil treatment:  A surface treatment for parquet, such as varnishing or oiling, protects the wood from wear and tear and dirt. This protective layer wears away over time and needs to be renewed regularly.

Prevention of mechanical damage:  It is recommended to install cleaning zones at entrances to minimize the transfer of sand and small stones that can damage the surface.

Deep cleaning

Resurfacing:  To revive the appearance of the floor, special cleaning agents such as Bona Deep Clean Solution can be used in combination with a cleaning machine. This process does not require a complete renovation, but only a thorough cleaning.

Humidity maintenance

Ambient humidity:  Wood reacts to changes in air humidity, so it is important to maintain relative humidity between 50-60% and temperature ideally between 20-24 ° C. This helps prevent the parquet from swelling or drying out.

Repairs and renovations

Re-sanding and re-varnishing:  In case of mechanical damage, it may be necessary to re-sand and then re-varnish the parquet. Local repairs can be difficult and usually require a complete renovation.

By following these basic maintenance requirements, you can ensure that your oak parquet floors remain beautiful and functional for many years.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOLID AND MULTI-LAYER OAK PARQUETS?

Construction

Solid oak parquet : Made from a single piece of oak wood, this construction ensures high durability and longevity, and can be refinished several times by sanding.

Multi-layer oak parquet : Consists of several layers, with the top layer usually made of high-quality oak and the bottom layers can be made of other woods or materials. This type of construction provides greater stability to humidity and temperature changes, reducing the risk of deformation.

Installation

Solid oak parquet : Usually requires professional installation, often with glue or nailing. Can be more sensitive to moisture and temperature.

Multi-layer oak parquet : Often allows for easier installation thanks to the “click” system or floating installation method, which facilitates assembly without the need for gluing or nailing.

Durability and maintenance

Solid oak parquet : They are very durable, but require regular maintenance such as oiling or varnishing to maintain their appearance and protect against moisture. They can be more susceptible to scratches.

Multi-layer oak parquet : Due to their multi-layer composition, they are less susceptible to deformation and damage. They are usually easier to maintain and more suitable for areas with higher humidity.

The choice between solid and multi-layer oak parquet depends on personal preference, budget and the specific needs of the space. Solid floors offer traditional beauty and durability, while multi-layer options provide greater stability and easier installation.
