WHY OAK PLANKS?

Oak planks are a wood product that is produced on machine saws by longitudinally cutting individual trunks from felled trees. It is used as a building or joinery material. An oak plank is similar to an oak plank, which is thicker than a plank, oak planks have a maximum thickness of 38mm. Solid oak planks are most often used for floors, stair treads, stairs, interior wall and ceiling cladding, furniture, but they are increasingly in demand outdoors for terraces, facades, raised beds, piers, bridges, decks, footbridges, oak fences, pergolas, gazebos and garden furniture.

WHAT OAK PLANKS CAN WE PRODUCE FOR YOU?

Freshly cut (cut) oak planks with unspecified moisture content

The disadvantage of using unprocessed lumber can be a high water content and subsequent volume changes and deformations when drying to equilibrium moisture. Higher water content can also be problematic in terms of increased risk of attack by wood-destroying insects, molds and fungi, but this is to a small extent in the case of oak, as oak is resistant to these attacks.

When purchasing raw lumber, it is a good idea to choose the right quality for the type of use. Generally speaking, center-grained lumber, ideally radial, without any pith content, will be the strongest and most stable.

On the other hand, installing elements made of undried wood containing pulp can cause undesirable effects in the form of twisting, drying cracks, etc.

This product of basic sawmilling does not lose its popularity in traditional carpentry constructions, where a relatively wide range of cross-sectional dimensions is used – exterior constructions, oak planks in the garden, raised beds and others.

OAK PLANKS

Technically dried, planed oak planks

The profiles are made from technically dried oak lumber with guaranteed humidity (exterior usually 15% ±3%, interior 10% ±2%). Center lumber, ideally radial without pith content, will be the strongest and most stable and is the primary cut of the log, care is taken to cut through the pith (center of the trunk). This guarantees higher dimensional stability.

Four-sided planing or sanding and chamfered edges are a matter of course for kiln-dried planks.

To produce oak joinery boards, logs are used, in order, the first and second pieces from the bottom of the tree with a smaller number of cut branches (knots) and minimal curvature.

SHOULD I TREAT OAK PLANKS OR LET THEM TURN GREY?

Oak does not need a surface treatment in outdoor conditions, as it can last for about 20 to 30 years without decaying without direct contact with the ground. Untreated oak will turn grey in about 2-3 years due to sunlight and moisture. The color first changes from the points most exposed to weathering and evens out over a few years, depending on the conditions. The greying of the wood can be slowed down by treating the wood with transparent wood preservatives. Exterior cladding made of oak also does not need to be surface treated, as the oak material can withstand UV radiation and moisture. However, the wood will turn grey over the years. Remember that during greying, the tone of the oak terrace surface may become uneven. In order for oak surfaces to remain durable and attractive, it is important to check them annually for damage. If necessary, washing away dirt from the wood surface helps. We produce oak terraces with visible or hidden joints in various widths and thicknesses according to the customer’s wishes.

DISADVANTAGES OF OAK PLANKS?

Susceptibility to deformations

Oak wood is prone to deformations such as warping and cracking, especially if not dried properly or if exposed to changes in humidity and temperature. This property can affect the stability of the structure and requires careful handling and maintenance.

Maintenance and care

Although oak wood has good resistance to rot and pests, it requires regular maintenance to maintain its appearance and functionality. Without proper impregnation and surface treatment, it can lose its aesthetic value over time and become more susceptible to damage.

Weight

Oak planks are relatively heavy, which can make handling and installation difficult. In some cases, this may mean additional costs for transportation and assembly.

Processing complexity

Oak wood can be more difficult to work with than softer woods. It requires quality tools and experience, which can increase labor costs during fabrication and installation.

These disadvantages should be considered when deciding to use oak building boards in a particular project to ensure their longevity and effectiveness.

WHICH OILS ARE BEST FOR TREATING OAK PLANKS?

The best oils for treating oak planks include several traditional and modern natural oils that provide protection and aesthetics to the wood.

Recommended oils

Linseed oil

A traditional choice for wood treatment that improves appearance and protects wood from moisture. It is readily available and has good penetration properties.

Tung oil

It stands out for its properties because it polymerizes and creates a durable surface that is resistant to water and UV radiation. It is one of the most durable oils for outdoor use

Hemp oil

Another natural oil used to treat wood. It has similar properties to linseed oil, but is less common.

Castor oil DCO (dehydrated)

This oil is drying and flexible, making it a good choice for blends with other oils, such as tung oil, to increase the durability of the coating.

Hard wax oil

A combination of oil and wax that provides protection against moisture and dirt. Ideal for floors and furniture where the natural look of the wood needs to be preserved

Safflower (milk thistle) oil

It is used for its specific properties and low tendency to yellow, which can be advantageous when treating light-colored woods.

Application and maintenance

Before application, it is important to thoroughly prepare the wooden surface, removing dust and any imperfections.

Oils are usually applied in two coats with sufficient drying time between applications (ideally 24-48 hours)

Regular maintenance includes cleaning the surface and re-applying oil as needed, which may be every 1-2 years depending on weather exposure.

Using these natural oils will help keep your oak planks in good condition and extend their lifespan.

ARE OAK PLANKS SUITABLE FOR HUMID ENVIRONMENTS?

Oak planks are known for their resistance and durability, making them suitable for a variety of applications, including use in humid environments.

Properties of oak planks

Moisture resistance : Oak wood has a high tannin content, which provides it with natural protection against biological pests and rot. This property makes oak resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations.

Technical processing : For use outdoors or in humid areas, it is recommended to choose kiln-dried oak planks that have a guaranteed moisture content (usually 15% ±3% for outdoors). These planks are more stable and less prone to deformation.

Stability and longevity : Oak planks, if properly treated and maintained, can last for decades, making them ideal for patios, garden furniture, and other outdoor structures

Due to their properties, oak planks are suitable for humid environments if they are properly processed and treated. It is important to choose quality raw materials with appropriate moisture content and, if necessary, apply protective coatings to increase their resistance to weathering.

Properties of oak planks

Durability : Oak wood is highly resistant to weathering and wood-destroying insects, ensuring a long lifespan even when exposed to outdoor conditions.

Aesthetics : The natural texture and rich color tones of oak wood add character and elegance to any outdoor space

Stability : Oak planks have good dimensional stability, which minimizes the risk of deformation due to moisture.

Outdoor use

Decks : Oak decks are easy to install and can last 20 to 30 years without rotting if not in direct contact with the ground. They are ideal for comfortable walking barefoot even on warm days.

Gazebos and pergolas : Thanks to their strength and stability, oak structures are able to withstand strong winds and other adverse weather conditions.

Garden furniture : Oak wood is easy to work with, allowing you to create intricate designs for outdoor furniture.

Maintenance

Although oak wood is naturally durable, proper maintenance is key to maintaining its appearance and functionality. Regular cleaning and application of protective coatings can significantly extend its lifespan.

Oak planks are a great choice for outdoor projects due to their durability, aesthetics, and longevity. Whether you’re planning to build a patio, gazebo, or garden furniture, oak wood will provide you with a material that combines functionality with beauty.
