WHAT RUSTIC OAK PLANKS CAN WE PRODUCE FOR YOU?

Freshly cut (cut) oak planks with undetermined moisture content

The disadvantage of using unprocessed lumber can be a high water content and subsequent volume changes and deformations when drying to equilibrium moisture. Higher water content can also be problematic in terms of increased risk of attack by wood-destroying insects, molds and fungi, but this is to a small extent in the case of oak, as oak is resistant to these attacks.

When purchasing raw lumber, it is a good idea to choose the right quality for the type of use. Generally speaking, center-grained lumber, ideally radial, without any pith content, will be the strongest and most stable.

On the other hand, installing elements made of undried wood containing pulp can cause undesirable effects in the form of twisting, drying cracks, etc.

This product of basic sawmilling does not lose its popularity in traditional carpentry constructions, where a relatively wide range of cross-sectional dimensions is used – exterior constructions, oak planks in the garden, raised beds and others.

Technically dried, planed oak planks

The profiles are made from technically dried oak lumber with guaranteed humidity (exterior usually 15% ±3%, interior 10% ±2%). Center lumber, ideally radial without pith content, will be the strongest and most stable and is the primary cut of the log, care is taken to cut through the pith (center of the trunk). This guarantees higher dimensional stability.

Four-sided planing or sanding and chamfered edges are a matter of course for kiln-dried planks.

To produce oak joinery planks, logs are used, first and second pieces from the bottom of the tree, with fewer cut branches (knots) and minimal curvature.

ARE OAK PLANKS SUITABLE FOR OUTDOOR USE?

Advantages of oak planks for outdoor use

Weather resistance:  Oak wood is naturally dense and contains high levels of tannins, which provide protection against moisture, rot and insects. This resistance means that oak planks can withstand rain, wind and sunlight much better than softer woods.

Longevity:  Due to its properties, oak planks maintain their structural integrity and aesthetic appearance for many years, minimizing the need for frequent repairs or replacements.

Aesthetics:  Oak wood has a natural beauty with rich color tones and distinctive growth rings, which adds value to any outdoor structure such as gazebos, pergolas, or garden furniture.

Using oak planks

Oak planks are often used for:

Gazebos and pergolas:  Provide a sturdy structure capable of withstanding weather conditions.

Garden furniture:  They are sturdy enough for outdoor seating and easy to process for various designs.

Patios and walkways:  Their moisture resistance makes them ideal for patio boards.

Maintenance

Although oak wood is naturally durable, regular maintenance, such as cleaning and applying protective coatings, is recommended. These coatings help protect the wood from UV rays and other environmental influences, extending its lifespan. Therefore, investing in oak planks is worth it if you are looking for an outdoor material that combines functionality with aesthetics.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RUSTIC AND STANDARD OAK PLANKS?

Appearance and processing

Rustic oak planks  feature a natural look that includes more knots and natural imperfections. This style is often preferred for its authenticity and natural character, which adds to the aesthetics of an interior or exterior.

Standard oak planks  usually have a smoother surface and fewer visible flaws. They are made from higher quality pieces of wood, which ensures a more uniform appearance and higher aesthetics.

Quality and use

Rustic planks  are often used in projects where a natural look is important, such as when building garden gazebos or interior furniture, where the unique details of the wood are valued.

Standard boards  are more versatile and are used in a wide range of applications, including furniture, flooring and construction. These boards can be further processed into jointing boards or other high-quality products.

Maintenance and durability

Both types of planks require some maintenance, but rustic varieties may need more frequent treatment due to natural imperfections that may be more susceptible to damage.

Standard planks are usually dried to a lower moisture content (8-10%), which helps minimize warping and ensures their long lifespan.

The choice between rustic and standard oak planks depends on the specific project and the aesthetic and functional requirements. Rustic variants bring natural beauty, while standard planks offer greater uniformity and stability.
