SHOULD I TREAT OAK TERRACES OR LET THEM TURN GREY?
Oak does not need a surface treatment in outdoor conditions, as it can last for about 20 to 30 years without decaying without direct contact with the ground. Untreated oak will turn grey in about 2-3 years due to sunlight and moisture. The color first changes from the points most exposed to weathering and evens out over a few years, depending on the conditions. The greying of the wood can be slowed down by treating the wood with transparent wood preservatives. Exterior cladding made of oak also does not need to be surface treated, as the oak material can withstand UV radiation and moisture. However, the wood will turn grey over the years. Remember that during greying, the tone of the oak terrace surface may become uneven. In order for oak surfaces to remain durable and attractive, it is important to check them annually for damage. If necessary, washing away dirt from the wood surface helps. We produce oak terraces with visible or hidden joints in various widths and thicknesses according to the customer’s wishes.

PROPERTIES OF OAK TERRACES
Material and appearance
Natural and timeless : Oak wood is considered one of the highest quality exterior woods, combining beauty with durability. Its natural grain and color contribute to an attractive appearance that develops a patina over time, giving the deck a unique character.
Dimensions : Oak decking boards are available in various lengths (from 2 to 5.5 m) and widths (from 9 to 15 cm), with a thickness usually between 19 mm and 26 mm.
Physical properties
Durability : Oak wood is very resistant to wood-destroying insects and weathering. Without surface treatment it can last 20 to 30 years, while under a roof it can have a lifespan of up to 100 years.
Stability : Grooved planks have grooves that help drain water and increase the dimensional stability of the wood, minimizing warping caused by moisture
Maintenance
Easy maintenance : Although grooved decking can trap dirt, it generally requires less frequent maintenance than smooth options. Regular inspection and cleaning are recommended to maintain aesthetics and durability.
Treatment : It is recommended to regularly treat the wood with oil or stain to protect against UV radiation and moisture. Untreated oak will turn gray within 2-3 years, but this process can be slowed down by using preservatives.
Safety and comfort
Slip resistance : Grooved planks provide better slip resistance, which is especially beneficial in wet conditions. Smooth surfaces can be slippery if not properly maintained
Comfort : Oak decking is pleasant to the touch and allows comfortable walking barefoot even in warm weather, as wood has low thermal conductivity.
Oak decks are therefore a great choice for those looking for a combination of aesthetics, durability and functionality in their outdoor spaces.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS WITH OAK TERRACES?
The most common problems with oak terraces include both installation errors and subsequent maintenance and the influence of weather conditions.
Errors
Insufficient substrate preparation : If the prisms are supported with unsuitable material such as mounting foam, this can lead to their degradation and collapse of the grid. The prisms should be placed on adjustable targets to ensure sufficient space for air circulation
Insufficient expansion gaps : It is important to leave sufficient gaps between the planks (minimum 8 mm) to allow the wood to react to changes in humidity and temperature. Gaps that are too small can lead to deformations and damage to the decking
Inappropriate choice of materials and fittings : Using cheaper materials or low-quality screws can cause rot and other problems in the future. It is recommended to use stainless steel screws, which are resistant to corrosion.
Maintenance and wear
Greying of wood : Due to weather conditions, especially UV radiation and humidity, the wood undergoes a natural process of patination, turning grey. This process can be more pronounced in softwoods than in hard exotic woods.
Green coating : In environments with higher humidity, moss or lichen can form on the terrace. This coating should be removed regularly to prevent slippery surfaces.
Oil stains and resins : Oil stains may appear when using the terrace, which must be treated with cleaning agents. Some wood species may also bleed resin at higher temperatures.
Blackening of wood : Caused by dirt and moisture build-up; prevention includes the use of protective oils that allow the wood to “breathe” and reduce the risk of damage

WHAT ARE THE BEST METHODS FOR MAINTENANCE OF OAK TERRACES?
Regular cleaning
Removing dirt : Regularly remove leaves, dust and other debris from the surface of your deck. This helps prevent moisture buildup that can lead to wood rot.
Using a mild detergent : For routine cleaning, use mild soap and water. Dry thoroughly after washing to minimize the risk of wood warping.
Protective coatings
Oiling : Using natural oils such as tung oil or linseed oil is an effective method of protecting oak wood. The oil penetrates the wood and helps maintain its elasticity and prevents cracking. It is recommended to apply the oil once or twice a year.
Varnishing : Varnishing creates a hard, protective layer on the surface of the wood that is resistant to water and UV rays. Varnish may require occasional repainting, especially in areas of heavy wear.
Waxing : Waxing adds shine to wood and improves its appearance, but is not as durable as oil or varnish. This method is suitable for less stressed elements.
Impregnation
Use of impregnation : Impregnation agents protect wood from rot and pests. These agents should be applied especially to wood exposed to high humidity or in direct contact with the ground.
Proper fit and ventilation
Ensure good air circulation : Oak decking should be positioned to ensure adequate air circulation around the structure. This helps prevent moisture build-up.
Professional maintenance
Professional renovation : For the long-term durability of terraces, it is recommended to use professional services for the renovation and conservation of wooden terraces, which will ensure high-quality treatment according to certified standards.
By following these methods, you can ensure the longevity and beauty of your oak decking.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF OAK TERRACES COMPARED TO OTHER TYPES OF WOOD?
Resistance and durability
High resistance to weathering : Oak wood is known for its resistance to rot and warping, allowing it to last outdoors for up to 20-30 years without the need for frequent maintenance
Stability : Oak does not crack or dry out, which ensures its shape stability even with changes in temperature and humidity.
Aesthetics and ecology
Natural look : Oak decking has an elegant and luxurious look that fits in with a variety of interior and exterior styles. The wood ages beautifully and develops a patina, which adds to its appeal.
Ecological material : Oak is a natural wood that is safe for health and the environment, which is important for many users
Maintenance
Low maintenance : Unlike softer woods that require regular protection with paints or oils, oak wood can be left untreated and still retain its functionality. Although untreated oak will turn grey over time, this process can be slowed down by using transparent preservatives.
Comparison with other wood species
Softwood (e.g. pine) : Softwood has a shorter lifespan and requires more frequent maintenance, which increases the overall cost of operating the deck.
Exotic wood (e.g. teak) : While exotic wood may have similar properties to oak, it is often more expensive and may have a higher ecological footprint due to the method of harvesting.
Oak terraces therefore represent a combination of aesthetic, practical and ecological advantages, which make them a convenient choice for anyone planning to build a terrace.
WHAT ARE THE MOST SUITABLE USES OF OAK TERRACES?
Transition between interior and exterior : Oak terraces serve as an elegant connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a pleasant atmosphere for relaxation and hospitality
Outdoor areas : Ideal for gardens, balconies, pool decks and conservatories. Oak wood is weather resistant, making it a great choice for outdoor use.
Garden furniture : Oak wood is also popular for making garden furniture such as tables, benches and chairs, which give the space a natural and elegant look.
Gazebos and pergolas : Oak wood structures provide a stable and durable solution for building gazebos and pergolas that create cozy places to relax
Decorative elements : Oak is also used to make various garden decorations, such as flower pots or deck chairs, which add a distinctive character to the garden.
Advantages of oak terraces
Aesthetics : The naturally beautiful appearance of oak wood fits into a variety of interior and exterior styles
Environmentally friendly : Oak is a natural material that is safe for both humans and the environment
Durability : Oak decks have a long lifespan (20 to 30 years) and resist rotting if not in direct contact with the ground
Maintenance : Wood is easily restored by oiling or varnishing, which extends its lifespan and maintains its attractive appearance.
Moisture resistance : Due to its natural resistance to moisture, oak decking is ideal for outdoor use.
Installation and maintenance
Installing an oak deck requires careful planning and the right materials. It is recommended to use adjustable brackets every 50 cm to maintain the correct slope and height. There should be a gap of 5-10 mm between each plank to ensure ventilation of the wood
Regular maintenance includes checking the condition of the terrace and cleaning it of any dirt. Oak terraces are not only a functional element of the exterior, but also an aesthetic addition that enriches every garden or outdoor space.
